Planned Giving
Planned giving is more than just a donation—it’s a lasting legacy that benefits both you and the Mississippi Museum of Art. By including the Museum in your estate plans, you can create a meaningful impact on the arts while also enjoying potential financial benefits, such as tax savings and increased income. Whether through a bequest, charitable trust, or other giving option, your support ensures that future generations can experience the power of art, all while aligning with your personal and financial goals. These gifts include enrollment into the Legacy Society, a group that honors the generosity of these special donors. Join us in shaping the future of creativity and culture.
Your gift to the Mississippi Museum of Art:
- provides long-term financial sustainability for the Museum, especially during times of uncertainty that all non-profits experience
- minimizes the pressure to charge admissions, expanding community access and resources, while simultaneously growing our audience
- allows the Museum to acquire new additions to the collection, explore new community and educational initiatives, and support daily operations
- establishes MMA as an institution for future generations
- invests in Mississippi’s vibrant, artistic legacy
There are many ways you can make a planned gift to the Museum, including:
- Bequests: Perhaps the simplest way to make a gift to MMA is to name the Mississippi Museum of Art as a beneficiary in your will. You may write a new will or simply add a codicil to your existing will. Bequests may come in the form of cash, security, real estate, or other personal properties, including works of art. An outright bequest to MMA is fully tax-deductible for estate-tax purposes.
- Appreciated Securities: Appreciated stocks, bonds, and mutual funds held for at least one year can be provided to MMA at the fair market value with no capital gains tax.
- Retirement Plans: Retirement plan beneficiaries (other than spouses) may only receive a portion of the plan’s value due to high taxation. You may name the Mississippi Museum of Art as a beneficiary of all or part of your retirement plan. Since MMA is tax-exempt, the Museum will generally receive the full amount of the plan’s value. Note: Donors aged 70 ½ or older can transfer IRA distributions directly to the Museum.
- Life Insurance: You may name the Mississippi Museum of Art as a beneficiary of all or part of your life insurance policy. Depending on the policy, you may receive an immediate income tax deduction and deduct on future premium payments on the policy.
- Charitable Gift Annuities: A Charitable Gift Annuity is an agreement between you and the Museum, where MMA provides you with an annuity, an annual fixed payment for life. At the end of the term, the balance is turned over to MMA. You qualify for an immediate income tax charitable deduction.
- Deferred Gift Annuities: Similar to the Charitable Gift Annuity except the annuity payments to the Museum do not begin immediately, which can be ideal for a younger donor. Deferring can generate a bigger charitable income tax deduction.
- Charitable Remainder Trusts: Donor transferred assets to the Museum that allows MMA to draw annual income for life or for a specific time period.
- Charitable Lead Trusts: Similar to a Remainder Trust except annual payments go to MMA. When the trust terminates, the assets are transferred back to you or your heirs, who will enjoy a substantial reduction in taxes.
- Donor Advised Fund at Community Foundation for Mississippi: Through a partnership with the Community Foundation for Mississippi, your contributions will go directly to MMA’s gardens.
The most useful Planned Gift is an unrestricted gift for the general purposes of the Museum. This permits MMA to use your gift wherever it is most needed at the time.
However, Planned Gifts can be allocated to support specific initiatives, such as Acquisitions and Exhibitions, Named Positions, Events Series or Signature Events, or to support the Museum’s Gardens, Center for Art and Public Exchange, or Building Fund.

Gifts of Art
The Mississippi Museum of Art began as the Mississippi Art Association, established in 1911 with a small collection of paintings, and it is only through the generosity of the art-collecting community that the Museum has continued to build the outstanding collection it has today.
