MISSISSIPPI, from its very beginnings, has been a land of stories. Creative contributions by artists have articulated for the world the state’s place in American identity. As Mississippi prepares to celebrate its bicentennnial - marking 200 years of statehood on December 10, 2017 - the Mississippi Museum of Art embarks on an unprecedented artistic celebration. This visual journey charts the waters of the state’s dynamic, nuanced, and fertile history. The Museum’s initiatives celebrating Mississippi's bicentennial explore the full scope of Mississippi art, from works made by indigenous peoples before European arrival to depictions of the Civil War, responses to civil rights, and the emergence of the state's contemporary artistic voice.
